Downgrain is located in Naples, Florida, where intense UV exposure and humidity present challenges to the production of durable outdoor furnishings. These circumstances have allowed us to test, refine and improve our products to endure various environmental factors.
We have provided durable products for golf courses in southwest Florida. These products have resistance to sun damage and the microbes and bacteria generated by humidity which can lead to the deterioration of wood furnishings.

Material SelectionDowngrain Design works with cypress, Bolivian walnut, teak, mahogany, black locust and ipe (to name a few). These woods are particularly resistant to the moisture and sun damage that occur with exposure to the elements.
Where appropriate we utilize quarter and rift sawn boards since those are the most stable cuts of lumber. They tend to expand and contract less which helps our products age gracefully. |
Joinery
Our designs incorporate joinery that takes into account how wood expands and contracts along with the stresses of repeated use. Our designs utilize traditional techniques such as mortise and tenon and lap joints, as well as corrosion resistant fasteners and waterproof glue. Wherever possible, parts can be disassembled for easy replacement or refinishing.
